Mr Hewes has been a senior surgeon at North Bristol NHS Trust since 2012. He has held the positions of Director for Gastrointestinal Surgery and Clinical Lead for Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery.
Mr Hewes has had a broad General Surgical training. He was brought up in Oxfordshire before qualifying from Sheffield University Medical School in 1995. He spent the early years of his training in Australia and London. His specialist training was concentrated in the Southeast of England, before moving to Bristol and taking up his consultant position in 2012.

Mr Hewes led the Weight Management service for over 10 years and was instrumental in establishing the regional Tier 3 and 4 services. He has trained many consultant surgeons in bariatrics and has an interest in improving safety and efficiency within the operating theatre and excellence in outcomes.
