Consultant and expert in Upper Gastrointestinal and Weight Loss Surgery

Mr Hewes’ expertise includes management of gallstone disease, acid reflux surgery, hernia repair and weight loss surgery. He was Clinical Director for GI Surgery and Lead of the Bariatric service at Southmead Hospital.

Mr James Hewes

Mr Hewes has had a broad General Surgical training. He was brought up in Oxfordshire before qualifying from Sheffield University Medical School in 1995. He spent the early years of his training in Australia and London. His specialist training was concentrated in the South East, before moving to Bristol and taking up his consultant position in 2012.

Research Experience

2001-2004   The Effects of Neoadjuvant Oxaliplatin Chemotherapy on Normal Human Liver Parenchyma The Royal Free and University Hospital Medical School, London (Supervisor: Professor BR Davidson) I investigated the effects of systemic oxaliplatin chemotherapy on the liver parenchyma. Cytotoxicity, apoptosis analysis and post-chemotherapy liver histology as well as studies into hepatocyte function were undertaken. This included the assessment of hospital and long-term outcome post hepatectomy. The thesis was submitted to Sheffield University and I have been awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine
